The Steps of ICSI
Each ICSI cycle begins with an evaluation of the donor mare to determine suitability and timing. Factors such as age, reproductive history, performance schedule, and overall health are considered when building an individualized plan.
At this stage, Solo Select works with our on-site reproductive veterinarians to determine the best approach for oocyte collection while minimizing disruption to the mare’s routine.
Oocytes are collected from the donor mare under veterinary supervision. Unlike traditional embryo transfer, ICSI does not require the mare to be synchronized with recipient mares at the time of collection.
Collected oocytes are immediately handled and prepared for laboratory processing.
Following collection, oocytes are transferred to Genetech, where the laboratory portion of the ICSI process is performed. A single sperm cell is selected and injected directly into each viable oocyte using micromanipulation technology.
This step allows fertilization to occur even in cases of limited semen availability or reduced sperm motility.
Fertilized oocytes are cultured in a controlled laboratory environment and monitored as they develop into embryos. Only embryos that meet established quality standards continue through the process.
This monitoring period is critical, as early embryo development plays a significant role in overall success rates.
Once embryos reach the appropriate developmental stage, they are either transferred into recipient mares or
cryopreserved for future use.
This flexibility allows breeders to align embryo transfer timing with recipient availability, competition schedules, or future program planning.
Recipient mares are selected, prepared, and managed through Solo Select’s recipient mare program. All recipient care, including health protocols, monitoring, and embryo implantation preparation, is overseen by the Solo Select team with decades of experience managing recipient mares.
This step is essential to ensuring pregnancy success and long term foal health.
Confirmed pregnancies are monitored throughout gestation. Recipient mares receive routine care, health evaluations, and foaling supervision as part of Solo Select’s comprehensive mare management program.
Foaling occurs at designated Solo Select facilities designed to support mare and foal care during this critical stage.
