Founder · Solo Select Horses
The ER nurse who rebuilt how performance horses are sold.
Meet Melanie
Melanie Smith loves what she does. She came up in Wichita Falls, Texas, with parents who gave her nothing and everything all at the same time: no horses, no shortcuts, but every ounce of belief a kid could ask for. She entered her first rodeo at five, and by ten she was volunteering at Whispers of Hope Horse Farm just to spend her weekends around horses. Eventually her parents gave in and bought her one, and from then on the question was never whether horses, only how.
Don and Craig Crumpler opened the door to the cutting-horse business when she was in high school, and she learned it from the stalls up. At nineteen she bought her first trailer with lesson money. Riding lessons and barrel-horse training paid her way through nursing school, and after graduation she worked as an emergency-room nurse, selling horses on the side with a standard that would later define a company: every horse videoed, vetted, and represented honestly.
In 2016 she left the hospital to do horses full time. Two years later, Solo Select Horses opened in a handful of leased stalls. And when the social-media storefront it grew on was erased overnight in 2020, she built her own platform instead: the Solo Select Sale, now the standard for professional online horse auctions.
What hasn't changed is the reason for all of it. Melanie still believes the horse comes first, that the truth sells better than the story, and that this industry is at its best when the next lesson kid can find her way in.

Today
Today Melanie directs strategy across the entire Solo Select ecosystem: more than 1,500 acres of Texas ranch land, 400 stalls, a climate-controlled stallion station, and one of the world's largest reproduction operations with 2,500+ recipient mares, with a team of more than one hundred people across multiple companies.
She has sold over $100 million in performance horses, reaches an audience of more than 120 million people a year across Solo Select's channels, hosts The Business of Horses podcast, and advises breeders and owners on breeding direction, sale timing, and long-term program positioning. The same calls she made building her own.
