Founder · Solo Select Horses
The ER nurse who rebuilt how performance horses are sold.
Biography
Melanie Smith is the founder of Solo Select. Her work goes far beyond the individual horse, spanning equine businesses, breeding programs, ranch operations, real estate, media, and long-term growth strategy. Her edge is the “big picture”: balancing genetic potential, the functional needs of a facility, the realities of the market, and the long-term financial goals of the owner.
Her perspective spans the entire spectrum of ownership, from the strategic acquisition of a first horse to course correction for globally recognized, multi-generational programs. She sees the market from every angle and understands how genetics, operations, presentation, and timing work together. That broad view has shaped how Solo Select evaluates horses, develops programs, and makes long-term decisions.
In 2018, Melanie began Solo Select in a handful of leased stalls with a vision far larger than her footprint. What followed was a period of aggressive scaling and high-stakes trial by fire. Today, alongside her partner Ty Smith, she has built an ecosystem encompassing over 1,500 acres of Texas ranch land, 400 stalls, and one of the world’s largest reproductive operations with over 2,500 recipient mares.
Melanie’s expertise isn’t limited to ranch operations. She has scaled a workforce of over 100 employees across multiple companies and successfully navigated the complexities of residential and multi-family real estate. The expansion wasn’t a straight line. It was a series of calculated risks, operational hurdles, and the kind of hard-earned lessons that only come from building a massive infrastructure in a remarkably short window.
With a digital reach of 120,000,000 people annually, Melanie has rewritten the rulebook on social media in the equine space, using visibility to drive pedigree valuation and market liquidity. She combines this market influence with a clinical approach to genetics and land use.
Her career has given her a comprehensive view of what it takes to build a high-performing legacy: world-class science, operational precision, market awareness, and the hard-won wisdom that comes from building at scale.
