Shotgunn Rider Wins West Texas Futurity 3-Year-Old Open
The Dual Rey daughter out of $1.1 million producer That Catomine earned $25,000 with Ryan Rapp in her first show.
AMARILLO, Texas—Shotgunn Rider, owned by Carpenter Farms and Solo Select, scored a 220 with Ryan Rapp to win the West Texas Futurity 3-Year-Old Open Final and $25,000 in her first show Monday, Aug. 10.
The filly led the first go with a 221 and carried a 435.5 aggregate into the final before securing the championship.
Tyson Benson trained Shotgunn Rider as a 2-year-old. Rapp later took over her training and showed her to the West Texas title.
"From the very start, this filly showed us how smart she was, and she gets better every single time we work her. I don't think she has reached her full potential yet, so we can't wait to see where she ends up," Ty Benson said.
"She’s been a treat to train. She’s exceptionally smart, mature-minded, and unlike any Dual Rey I’ve ever ridden. She comes out the same every day, wants to cut, and has her own unique style. She’s my favorite three-year-old to work, and I truly love that little mare. We’ll keep showing her and building on her success for as long as we can," Ryann Rapp said.
“We bought this filly and sent her to Ty Benson as a 2-year-old,” Solo Select founder Melanie Smith said. “Todd Carpenter bought into her later that year, and we both knew that if she could cut, we had an incredible future broodmare. She has shown us so much style, and we feel she and Ryan have a big career ahead of them. She is going to be a fantastic cross on all the stallions we have here, including Third Edge and LBR Hangem. Her maternal side is unreal.”
Shotgunn Rider is by Dual Rey and out of That Catomine, an NCHA Open Super Stakes and NCHA Open Derby finalist whose offspring have earned more than $1.1 million.
The cross already carries proven cutting credentials. Duramax Dually, also by Dual Rey out of That Catomine, has earned over $572,000 and holds multiple titles including NCHA World Champion Gelding. He entered the NCHA Horse Hall of Fame in 2022.
With Wesley Galyean, Duramax Dually was the 2018 Arbuckle Mountain Futurity 4-Year-Old Open co-reserve champion and the 2019 NCHA Classic Challenge Open and Brazos Bash Classic Open reserve champion. The pair won the 2020 The Non-Pro plus The Open 5/6-Year-Old Open with a 230 and the 2020 NCHA Classic Challenge Open with a 226.
