Equine ICSI vs. Conventional Embryo Transfer
Compare how conventional embryo transfer and ICSI produce embryos, use semen, involve the donor mare, and connect to a recipient mare.
Written by Solo Select Horses Reviewed July 15, 2026

The short answer
Conventional embryo transfer usually begins by breeding the donor mare and recovering an embryo from her uterus. ICSI begins by collecting oocytes from the donor mare, then a laboratory injects a single sperm cell into an oocyte and cultures any resulting embryo. Both paths may end with an embryo transferred into a recipient mare.
01
Conventional embryo transfer
The donor mare is bred with semen selected for the breeding plan. Her cycle is monitored, an embryo recovery is attempted at the appropriate time, and a recovered embryo may be transferred into a synchronized recipient or preserved when suitable.
02
ICSI
Oocytes are collected from the donor mare under veterinary supervision. A specialized laboratory performs fertilization by injecting a sperm cell into an oocyte, then monitors development. An embryo that reaches the appropriate stage may be transferred fresh or cryopreserved for later transfer.

Questions that shape the decision
Neither method is automatically better. The mare owner, reproductive veterinarian, laboratory, stallion or semen manager, and recipient program should evaluate the individual breeding objective.
- Donor mare age, reproductive history, and current use
- Semen availability, condition, and contractual restrictions
- Timing within the breeding and competition calendar
- Laboratory, transport, recipient, and storage logistics
- Budget and tolerance for multiple procedures or cycles
- Registry requirements for the resulting foal

Where Solo Select participates
Solo Select provides a full-service ICSI management path with on-site oocyte collection, laboratory coordination, recipient mare management, pregnancy care, and foaling options. Conventional breeding, embryo recovery, transfer, and ship-in recipient services are also available through the reproduction program.
Common Questions
Direct answers
- Does ICSI eliminate the need for a recipient mare?
- No. If the resulting embryo is intended for a pregnancy, it is transferred into a suitable recipient mare unless another plan is chosen.
- Does ICSI guarantee an embryo?
- No. Oocyte recovery, maturation, fertilization, embryo development, transfer, and pregnancy all have variables. Ask the veterinary and laboratory teams to discuss the individual case.
