How the modern rope horse is evolving

The next great rope horse can come from more than one direction.

Roping is developing rapidly. With every generation, we are seeing influence come from more directions—and the horses become even better athletes, more specialized for the job in front of them.

Some sires made their names in the roping. Others were winners in cutting or cow horse, and breeders are now breeding rope-horse mares to them and developing their offspring for the roping pen. Some found their success on the track and bring the run a head horse needs. Read below to see how each type can contribute to the next great rope horses being developed at Solo Select.

  1. 01

Stallions that won in the roping

Their own heading, heeling or tie-down record is the proof. Pride And Joyy, The Darkk Side, Dirty Fling, Time To Glo and This Catt Shines give breeders results earned in the events the foal is being bred to perform.

  2. 02

Cutting and cow-horse winners siring rope horses

These stallions earned their own records in cutting or reined cow horse. Breeders are breeding rope-horse mares to them, then putting the offspring into heading, heeling, breakaway and tie-down programs to add cow, feel, trainability and stop. Once In A Blu Boon sired AQHA Junior Heading World Champion The Darkk Side, and Woody Be Tuff finished 2025 as QData's No. 3 team-roping sire. The proof is in the rope horses they have sired, while their own show records remain exactly what they were: cutting or cow horse.

  3. 03

Running-bred stallions that add head-horse speed

A head horse has to get there. Running blood can add acceleration, stride and the ability to reach cattle while seeking to preserve the mare's cow and rate. Sheik Jean Fly HTT brings a documented barrel and running foundation for breeders who need more run in the cross.

Solo Select Rope Horse Incentive

More than a breeding. Another way to win.

Breed for the horse—and know exactly what the contract can unlock.

That means breeding with Solo Select is not only a choice about genetics. It gives you another way to get paid on a rope horse you own or ride. The first running paid a record $581,580 in 2025, including $100,000 to both the heading and heeling champions. The 2026 futurity has a minimum $560,000 added before entry fees; the projected $450,000 Solo Roping Incentive contribution is part of that event total. Entry fees build the purse further, so the final payout remains to be determined.

Roping stallion FAQ

What breeders ask

Which roping stallions stand at Solo Select?

The current Solo Select Roping Incentive roster includes Bleu On Black, Boons Reflections, CR Get Tuff, Dirty Fling, Hesa Dual Bet, Metallic Cattack, Metallics MVP, Meteles Cat, Once In A Blu Boon, Plain Catty, Pride And Joyy, Sheik Jean Fly HTT, Some Kinda Stevie, Stylin High Brow, The Animal, The Darkk Side, The Reyl McCoy, Third Edge, This Catt Shines, Time To Glo, Woody Be Tuff. This page updates from the same live roster used by the stallion office.

Which Solo Select stallions have rope-horse records or offspring?

The roster includes stallions with their own heading, heeling and tie-down records; established sires with current rope-horse earners; young sires whose first offspring are in leading programs; and performance outcrosses selected for specific rope-horse goals. Every entry above states which kind of evidence applies so a cutting or cow-horse title is never presented as a roping title.

Who has ridden the stallions on the Solo Select roping roster?

The individual records include Austin Shepard and Don Crumpler on Woody Be Tuff, Jake Gorrell on Plain Catty, Wesley Galyean on Third Edge, Lee Francois and James Payne on The Animal, Tim Smith and Beau Galyean on Metallics MVP, and Wes Ashlock and Cody McCartney on Metallic Cattack. The roster keeps those stallion riders separate from the trainers and competitors currently developing or showing their offspring.

How do I choose a roping stallion for my mare?

Start with the mare and pin down the goal for the cross. Decide whether the target is heading, heeling, breakaway or tie-down; whether the foal is intended to keep or sell; and which physical, mental, pedigree and market traits the stallion must contribute. Then compare documented records, offspring evidence, incentive eligibility, breeding method and the complete contract.

How current are the fees and Roping Incentive enrollments?

This page reads the same published stallion records and active incentive enrollments used by Solo Select's main roster and individual stallion profiles. When the office updates an enrollment, fee, availability or published stallion, this page updates from that source of truth.
