Premier breeders Paul and Valerie Gober are offering eight standout yearlings at the Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sale in Fort Worth, Texas, all fit and prepared by Solo Select in Whitesboro, Texas.
Each yearling is out of one of the Select Genes mares, offered by the Gobers to the public through the program, and by some of the industry's top-producing stallions—Hottish, Dual Reyish, Hashtags, High Brow Cat, Metallic Cat and Peptoboonsmal—creating unprecedented black-type crosses.
"The Gobers have committed to producing the kind of horses that push the industry to the next level," Solo Select's Melanie Smith said. "They're the kind of breeders who exemplify our motto of #theVeryBest."
Paul Gober, of Seminole, Oklahoma, grew up in the horse business with a father who match-raced Quarter Horses. But after a stint in Thoroughbreds, Paul got out of the horse business to focus on his business, Gober Construction.
"I'm 65 now, and semiretired," Gober said. "The younger people take care of my business. My wife, Valerie, began her journey in the horse business by following me to a horse sale to buy our first mare, Shorty Peppy Tari. She got the bug - and now we both have a love for great horses. Doug Carpenter helped us put together our first set of big-time performance horse mares, and eventually referred us to Ty & Melanie to manage them. Everything we've done, we've had good people behind us. I'd hate to think we'd have to go out here in the horse world and make it without a team like this behind us."
The Gobers now own SS Blacks Lil Kitty, dam to the superstar mare Blackish, and they just recently purchased Plain Catty in the The Select Select Online's Thanksgiving Sale.
"They have high-caliber mares that are in the top end of the cutting and the cow horses," Ty Smith said. "They've bought the right mares, and let us breed to the right studs, to have a high-quality individual. They've allowed us to help them with the stallion choices to cross on the great mares they've added to their program to have high-quality yearlings to sell every year."
Gobers' Featured NCHA Futurity Western Bloodstock Sale Offerings:
Delish, out of the $116,000-earning Metallic Cat daughter Metallic Mandy by NCHA Hall of Fame and NCHA Futurity Champion stallion Dual Reyish, is about as fancy as a yearling can get.
"She has plenty of presence and a lot of class." Ty said. "She's one you'd pick out of a crowd."
Grey Man is out of one of the most famous daughters of Playgun to ever show—the $207,000 earner ARC Ruby Playgunia, by the incomparable High Brow Cat, producer of over $92.8 million in earners.
The most sizable of the Gobers' offerings, Grey Man has the substance to last at 1,090 lbs and 14.2 hands.
"He has such great bone," Melanie said. "He has the Playgun attributes with a big pretty eye and a great head. He favors the Playgun traits that people love."
"We give Paul credit for picking Pepto," Ty said. "The reason we did that is because it's a total outcross to all Cat daughters to be a stud prospect. It combines two of the most sought-after classic stallions in the industry, and a cross that hasn't been done in a long time. He is absolutely one of a kind in modern day."
There are exactly 12 Peptoboonsmal offspring from 2022, and Grayy and Metallica at lot 7111 are two of them.
"This colt really gets around in the round pen," Melanie said. "He is bright eared, physical, a big stopper and strong. Spice is a phenomenal prospect by Hottish - and his mother was the Limited Open Futurity Champion with Chris Hanson. He is bred to be a great one."
