Southern Welding owner Shane Boston's world is built on two things: big projects and big passions.
One day, his crews are scattered across the United States, scaling scaffolds and refurbishing massive industrial equipment. The next, he’s swapping his steel-toe boots for a cowboy hat at the Clay Logan Open to the World roping event he helped create.
Boston’s business may serve industries from power plants to the U.S. military, but his heart has long been tied to the Western performance horse community. Six or seven years ago, he and Clay Logan launched the roping event that now draws some of the best in the sport.
“I’ve been a part of it since day one. Anytime you can help grow the sport, it’s great.” — Shane Boston
That same commitment to growth is what led Southern Welding to sponsor the Solo Select Futurity.
“Shane has been a longtime supporter and friend. His dedication to both his business and the sport makes him a perfect partner for the Futurity.” — Melanie Smith
The addition of the Futurity to the Clay Logan Open to the World, already one of the largest team roping events of the year, creates a one-of-a-kind experience.
“From a horse enthusiast standpoint, I think it puts it over the top. These big events give horse owners a real opportunity to make money, and the added money here is unbelievable.” — Shane Boston
Boston sees parallels between the arena and the job-site. In both places, success comes from preparation, precision, and the right team in place. Just like a top rope horse is honed long before it ever backs into the box, the kind of large-scale projects Southern Welding takes on are built on groundwork that most never see. Whether it’s a refinery shutdown or a custom fabrication project, the work is done with the same level of commitment Boston brings to supporting the sport he loves.

The Solo Select Futurity is a premier event for 4-year-old rope horses, offering big payouts, minimal restrictions, and a straightforward entry process designed to grow the rope horse industry. Owners who have purchased a 2025 Solo Select breeding can enter their horse at the regular $1,000 rate, while those without a breeding can still compete through a $5,000 buy-in per horse, per class. Pre-entries are accepted through September 21, with late entries allowed September 22–28 for an additional $500 per horse. Riders may enter up to five horses per class, and every entry directly contributes to the futurity purse, making the event bigger and more rewarding for everyone.
