Broodmares and their foals under a Texas oak at Solo Select

Recipient Mare Leasing

One of the Largest Recip Herds in the World

Sourcing recipient mares is the bottleneck of every embryo transfer program.

Solo Select keeps over 2,500 recipient mares under year-round management, so there is a synchronized mare ready the day your embryo is. Some of those embryos come from donor mares we breed here in our reproduction program. Just as many arrive by air and highway, shipped in fresh, frozen, or from ICSI, from vet clinics and labs all over the country and anywhere in the world.

Either way, the lease works the same. You reserve, we transfer here in North Texas, and once she checks in foal at 24 days you can take her home to foal out with your own program, or leave her with us under the live foal guarantee. After weaning, she comes back to us. You never own a mare you only needed for one job.

How the Lease Works

Ship an embryo in from your own clinic, or breed your mare here. The lease runs the same way either way.

  1. 1

    Reserve

A $1,000 deposit reserves a recipient mare for 2027 and is applied to your first implant fee.

  2. 2

    Ship Your Embryo In

Any vet clinic or ICSI lab, anywhere in the world, ships us your embryo, fresh, frozen, or ICSI. It arrives by air or courier, your vet texts us on ovulation and shipment day, and a synchronized mare is waiting.

  3. 3

    Transfer

We implant here in North Texas, into a mare matched from our own herd. A $1,000 implant fee applies per attempt; your deposit covers the first.

  4. 4

    Confirm

At the 24-day positive heartbeat check, the lease fee is due and she is yours for the year.

  5. 5

Take Her Home or Leave Her

Pick her up in foal any day of the week, or leave her with us year-round for the live foal guarantee. Mares that go home return open after weaning, by November 1 of the foal year.

Embryo intake

Any Clinic. Any Lab. Anywhere.

You do not have to breed with us to lease from us.

Solo Select is the destination side of embryo transfer. Any vet clinic or ICSI lab, anywhere in the world, can ship us embryos: fresh flush embryos, frozen embryos, and fresh ICSI embryos arrive here from all over the country, every year. Your vet texts us on ovulation and shipment day, and a synchronized recipient mare is waiting.

Frozen embryos are thawed in our controlled on-site lab and transferred immediately, never shipped after thaw. Keeping thaw and transfer under one roof reduces handling stress and gives us total control over recipient placement.

The live foal guarantee

Protect the pregnancy. Protect your investment.

A confirmed pregnancy is the whole investment: the breeding fee, the cycle, a year of your mare’s life. Holding it takes daily hormone support and a close eye for trouble, and if something slips, you start over. Leave her with us and the daily work is ours, not yours.

Take Her Home

Pick her up any day of the week, in foal and video-confirmed within three days of departure. From the day she loads, it is all on you:

  • Daily progesterone and/or Regumate
  • Watching her around the clock
  • Foaling, on your own
  • The full risk if the pregnancy slips

She returns open after weaning. The live foal guarantee ends the day she leaves.

The protected path

Leave Her With Us

Board is $22 a day. From there, we take the daily work off your hands:

  • Daily progesterone and/or Regumate, given by our team
  • Progesterone tested and monitored through our on-site lab
  • Ultrasound pregnancy checks
  • 24/7 supervised foaling

And if a recipient mare dies while she is on site, that liability is ours, not yours.

The live foal guarantee

A live foal means standing and nursing without assistance. If she comes up open in our care, you get a redo or a lease-fee credit for next year, so one lost pregnancy never costs you the whole year.

The 2027 Recipient Mare Lease Contract

Plain and simple: a $1,000 deposit reserves each mare. The lease fee is due when she checks in foal at 24 days. She comes back to us open, in good health and good flesh, by November 1 of the foal year, or stays with us year-round so you can take advantage of our live foal guarantee.

Breeding the donor mare too?

Breed Her Here, and It's One Program

Bring the donor mare herself and the whole cycle happens in-house: breeding, flushes, on-site oocyte aspiration for ICSI, transfer into this herd, and 24/7 supervised foaling. One call, one program, and the recipient pregnancy stays under the live foal guarantee.

Recipient Mare Leasing FAQ

What is a recipient mare?

A recipient mare is the surrogate that carries an embryo to term after it is transferred from the donor mare. At Solo Select, embryos are placed into a managed herd of over 2,500 recipient mares, one of the largest recipient mare herds in the world.

Can I ship an embryo to Solo Select from another state or country?

Yes. Any vet clinic or ICSI lab, anywhere in the world, can ship embryos to Solo Select: fresh flush embryos, frozen embryos, and fresh ICSI embryos arrive from all over the country every year. Contact the Recip Farm office before you flush to coordinate intake and timing.

Do I have to breed my mare at Solo Select to lease a recipient mare?

No. Ship-in clients lease recipient mares every year. If we breed your donor mare here in our reproduction program, transfer day is simpler still, but the lease itself works the same either way.

How does a recipient mare lease work?

A $1,000 deposit reserves each mare for the year. We transfer your embryo here in North Texas, and at the 24-day positive heartbeat check the lease fee is due. You can then pick her up and foal out at home, or leave her with us. She returns to Solo Select open, after weaning, by November 1 of the foal year.

How much does it cost to lease a recipient mare?

For 2027, the lease fee is $5,000 per pregnancy for a fresh flush or thawed embryo and $6,500 for fresh ICSI, due at the 24-day positive heartbeat check. A $1,000 implant fee applies per transfer attempt, and a $1,000 per-mare deposit reserves your mare and covers the first attempt. Board of $22 per day applies only while she stays with us.

Why lease a recipient mare instead of buying one?

A recipient mare has one job that lasts about a year. Buying her means capital up front, board and vet work for as long as you own her, and a mare still on your feed bill after weaning. Leasing means she arrives ready, carries your foal, and comes back to us. If you do decide to keep her or to sell the foal in utero, she can be purchased outright for a flat mare purchase fee.

When is the lease fee due?

At the 24-day positive heartbeat check. If she stays with us, board of $22 per day begins the same day.

Is there a live foal guarantee?

Yes, for as long as the mare remains at Solo Select, all the way through a foal standing and nursing without assistance. If a mare in our care turns up open, you receive a redo or a lease-fee credit for the following year. Once she leaves the property, the guarantee ends and her care is in your hands. Every mare is video-confirmed in foal within three days of departure.

When do I return the recipient mare?

Open, in good health and good flesh, by November 1 of the year your foal is born. Late returns carry a fee, and unreturned mares are billed at the mare purchase price.

Can my vet palpate or re-use the recipient mare?

Pregnancy exams only. Leased recipient mares are never to be re-used or implanted elsewhere. If you want to re-use a Solo Select mare, she must be purchased and paid for in full first.

Can I sell the foal in utero?

Yes, but some sales require that recipient mares not be returned before sale day. In that case, or any time the mare will not come back to us, she must be purchased for the mare purchase fee. Call the office before you consign and we will walk you through it.

When should I reserve recipient mares for 2027?

Early. Transfers run February 1 through July 15, deposits are valid for 2027 only and do not carry over, and demand peaks fast once transfers open. Call or text 940-372-8726 to reserve.
